He established the Christmas charity work which is conducted by the Shriners each year, and it was he who first formulated plans for the establishment of seven Shrine hospitals for crippled children, most of which are now in operation. He was characterized by prominent men of the city as being a man of unusually pleasing personality and strong character. He was noted for his vigorous enthusiasm and his knack of inspiring his associates to higher accomplishments. While a resident of Marion, Iowa, he was elected Fire Chief and he organized the first Firemen's Association of that state.
