Leslie Verne Case

The lives of most men seem to run their course according to prescribed formulae, or perhaps, to given plans and specifications--so alike are they in detail. The master weaver utilizes the same warp and woof, the shuttle weaves the fabrics, but now and then the pattern is abruptly and pleasingly changed. This change of pattern relieves the monotony, and we discover why the departure is interesting. A variety of vocations, and an equal proficiency in all, brings new colors and an harmonious design to the fabric of any man's life. Leslie Verne Case is a successful pedagogue, an eminent geologist, and a well known ornithologist and archaeologist. As a geologist he made the first discovery of radium-bearing ore in New York State. This product, cyrtolite combined with autonite and other complex uranium compounds, was found in Bedford, Westchester County, and was given due publicity in an article written by Professor L. McI. Luquer of Columbia University in the "American Geologist." The radium ores collected by Mr. Case formed a part of the Smithsonian exhibit at St. Louis at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, and were later transferred to the American Museum of Natural History of New York City. Mr. Case is also an expert on gem stones. In the study of birds and their habits he is an authority, and his ornithological writings are learned and many. Mr. Case has lectured extensively on archaeology, and a part of his Egyptian collection is given prominent place in the New York State Museum at Albany.

Leslie Verne Case was born October 1, 1874, at Cohocton, New York, a son of George Washington and Ella Mary (Peck) case. Mr. Case is descended from Colonial New England stock. Among his ancestors were several of Revolutionary fame, including colonel Ethan Allen, Zebulun Phillips, and Caleb Mathewson. George Washington Case served for some years as police justice, but has since retired. During the Civil War he volunteered in the New York National Guard, Company A, and after having served his enlisted time received an honorable discharge, he reenlisted in the 188th United States Infantry, Company F, 1st Division, 2d Brigade of the 5th Corps. He served with General U. S. Grant's army until the end of the war, when he received his honorary discharge. Mr. Case has served as aid-de-camp in the National Encampment, and is the present commander of Bingham Post, Grand Army of the Republic.

Leslie Verne Case, following his preparatory course in the Atlanta High School, entered the Naples Academy and was graduated in 1894. He then entered the Geneseo State Normal School and received the classical diploma in 1897. He supplemented his pedagogical training by a thorough course at New York University, graduating with the class of 1905. Since then he has taken a considerable amount of post-graduate work in both Cornell University and Columbia University. During his undergraduate days he was affiliated with the Gamma Sigma fraternity.

From 1897 to 1898 Mr. Case was connected with the public school of West River, New York. During the two following years he was employed in the public school at Bedford, New York, and resigned to enter the Tarrytown public school system in 1900. With the reorganization of the schools into a supervisory unit Mr. Case was appointed the first superintendent of the Tarrytown public schools, which position he is still occupying . . . . a period covering nearly a quarter of a century. He now ranks as the senior among the city and village superintendents in the point of continuous service in Westchester County. For three summers Mr. Case was honored as faculty lecturer on science at the New York State Summer School for Teachers at Cliff Haven, New York. Mr. Case has been a pioneer in scientific research and has invented several instruments which have been widely used. He has done much research work in color photography, and his photograph of lightening, reproduced simultaneously in the Buffalo "Sunday Courier" and the Syracuse "Sunday Herald" of August 20, 1894, was one of the first photographs of lightening ever taken. He made the first X-ray photograph in Tarrytown inn 1903, and installed the first wireless receiving set in Tarrytown in 1904. When the late Professor Tuff of Columbia University went to Paris to study with the Curries, Mr. Case was put in charge of the radium measurements in the Phoenix Research Laboratory of the university. During the World War Mr. Case was chairman of the "four-minute" men of Tarrytown and North Tarrytown. He is now a member of the Board of Water commissioners of Tarrytown, and also an active member of the Tarrytown Fire Department.

Mr. Case was married, at Brownsville, Tennessee, on April 7, 1914, to Sarah Gray, daughter of John Turner and Ora (Battle) Gray. Among her ancestors of Revolutionary fame were Captain William Battle, Lieutenant John Williams, Nathan Brodie, John William Crockett, and Rev. John Thompson. The Battle family was of French Huguenot stock and were among the settlers of New Rochelle, going from there to Virginia, and thence to Tennessee. Of this marriage there is one child, George Battle Case, born at Tarrytown, New York on December 8, 1922. Mr. and Mrs. Case are members of the First Presbyterian Church of New York City.
