     Ransom Charles Holcombe was born on 2 September 1895 at Toledo, Lewis Co., WA.¹ He was the son of Ransom Hall Holcombe and Jenny Brown. Ransom Charles Holcombe died on 22 May 1970 at Spokane, Spokane Co, WA, at age 74. He was buried at Spring Canyon Cemetery, Lincoln, Lincoln Co., WA.²

This is probably the Ranson Charles Holcomb who applied or a Social Security Account Number on 7 August 1942. His mailing address was Box 96, Coulee Dam, Washington. He was 46 years old, having been born on 2 September 1895 in Toledo, Lewis Co., WA. His father was Ranson H. Holcomb, his mother Jennie Brown. He worked for Centennial Flouring Mills Co., 814 Second Ave. Bldg., Seattle, WA. He was assigned SSAN 532-20-8259.

The inconsistencies with the information from Donna Larose need to be worked out.

     Sarah Crawford was born in 1869. She was the daughter of George Crawford and Mary (?) Sarah Crawford married Myron McRoberts Holcombe, son of Eli Denio Holcombe and Jane Stockman, on 20 June 1902. Sarah Crawford died in 1941.¹

     Mabel C. Holcombe was born on 1 November 1902 at New York City, NY.^1,2 She was the daughter of Myron McRoberts Holcombe and Sarah Crawford. Mabel C. Holcombe died on 5 May 1981 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT, at age 78.^1,2 She was buried at North Cemetery, Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT.¹

     Eleanor Elizabeth Holcombe was born on 12 April 1907 at New York City, NY. She was the daughter of Myron McRoberts Holcombe and Sarah Crawford. Eleanor Elizabeth Holcombe died on 29 January 1964 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT, at age 56.¹ She was buried at North Cemetery, Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT.¹

It is my understanding (though this is not meantioned by Stratton) that Eleanor was also unamrried, as her sister, Mabel C. Holcomb, and that she and Mabel were the last of the Holcomb family to live in the "Holcomb Homestead". Mabel outlived Eleanor by nearly 20 years, and the house has since been sold out of the family. ¹

     Andrew George Holcombe was born on 16 February 1910 at New York City, NY.¹ He was the son of Myron McRoberts Holcombe and Sarah Crawford. Andrew George Holcombe died on 16 April 1911 at New York City, NY, at age 1.¹

     Martha Knapp married Samuel Holcombe, son of Carmi Holcombe and Apphia Holcombe, in 1817 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT.

     Cyrus Holcombe was born on 19 January 1824 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT.³ He was the son of Samuel Holcombe and Martha Knapp. Cyrus Holcombe married Almeda Celesta Hall, daughter of Simeon Hall and Martha Cochran, in 1850.³ Cyrus Holcombe died on 25 April 1907 at Milton, Chittenden Co., VT, at age 83.³

A carpenter and builder, and owned a fruit farm on Isle La Motte. Lived at Chateaugay, NY, for a short time; spent his last years in the home of his son, Luman. In 1894 he represented the town of La Motte in the VT legislature; also served on the board of Selectmen and the School Committee, and was steward of the Methodist Episcopal Church. ⁴

Cyrus and Almeda were enumerated in the 1860 Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT, federal census, page 71. He was a carpenter, age 36, she was 27. Children in the household were Elvarette 8, and Elmer 4. Samuel, age 62 was also in the household.

Cyrus and Almeda were enumerated in the 1880 Isle LaMotte, Grand Isle Co., VT, federal census. He was a farmer age 56, she was 47. Children in the household were Elma 16, and Luman 14.

In 1900, widower Cyrus was enumerated in the household of his son Luman; he was 76.

     Almeda Celesta Hall was born on 13 July 1832 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT.² She was the daughter of Simeon Hall and Martha Cochran. Almeda Celesta Hall married Cyrus Holcombe, son of Samuel Holcombe and Martha Knapp, in 1850.² Almeda Celesta Hall died on 2 September 1883 at age 51.²

     Warham Jarvis Alderman was the son of Jarvis Alderman and Charlotte Grant.¹ Warham Jarvis Alderman was born circa 1828 at OH. He married Mary Alderman.¹ Warham Jarvis Alderman died in 1904.¹

The Alderman Genealogy gives birth and death dates for Mary and suggests she is probably a cousin. The birth date of 1848 is not possible given the census record.

In the 1860 census they are living next door to Lorenzo and Evaline (Alderman) Alderman who had a daughter, Mary, born in 1837. It is possible that this is the cousin that he married.

The Alderman Genealogy also gives Warham's birth date as 1830, but the census records consistently indicate an earlier date.

Warham was enumerated in the 1850 Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH, federal census in the household of his uncle Alexander. He was a laborer, age 22, born in Ohio.

Warham and Mary were enumerated in the 1860 Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH, federal census, page 130. He was a farmer age 29, born in Ohio; she was 22 born in Ohio. Children in the household, all born in Ohio were Orista 6, Homer 3, and Artemicia 7/12.

Warham and Mary were enumerated in the 1870, Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH, federal census, page 22 (series M593, roll 1170, image 422). He was a farm laborer, age 42, she was 37; both were born in Ohio. Children in the household, all born in Ohio, were Orista 16, Homer 12, Artemicia 9, Lillian 5, and Armenia 4/12.

Warham and Mary were enumerated in the 1880 Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH, federal census, page 6. He was a stone mason, age 52, she was 43. Children in the household were Homer 23, Lileond 16, Grace A. 10, Unice 5, and Warham Jr. 3.

     Mary Alderman was born circa 1836 at OH.^1,2 She married Warham Jarvis Alderman, son of Jarvis Alderman and Charlotte Grant.¹ Mary Alderman died in 1888.¹

     Elvoretta Elvira Holcombe was born on 19 April 1852 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT.³ She was the daughter of Cyrus Holcombe and Almeda Celesta Hall. Elvoretta Elvira Holcombe married Leonard Bernard Mott.³ Elvoretta Elvira Holcombe died on 13 January 1930 at Newport News, VA, at age 77.³ She lived in 1947 at 551 30th St., Newport News, VA.

     Elmer Holcombe was born in 1857. He was the son of Cyrus Holcombe and Almeda Celesta Hall.

     Orista Alderman was born circa 1853 at OH.¹ She was the daughter of Warham Jarvis Alderman and Mary Alderman.¹

     Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe was born on 9 April 1865 at Chateaugay, Franklin Co., NY.³ He was the son of Cyrus Holcombe and Almeda Celesta Hall. Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe married Eleanor Pearl Brainard, daughter of Aldis Owen Brainard and Jane Eliza French, on 21 August 1895 at St. Albans, VT.⁴ Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe died on 27 March 1950 at Milton, Chittenden Co., VT, at age 84. He was buried at Milton Village Cemetery, Milton, Chittenden Co., VT.⁵

Educated at Isle la Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT and at St. Albans, BTY; Troy, NY Business College; served as bookkeeper Jordan-Marsh & Company in Boston, MA, and studied in night schools; served in express work of the Boston & Albany RR in its Boston station; was a teacher at Isle La Motte; partner in business of storing ice for New York City market; traveled for a publisher of Springfield, MA; studied at the College of Medicine, University of VT, receiving MD degree there 1894. Located July 16, 1894 at Milton, Chittenden Co., VT to practice, where in abaout 1906 he improvised an incubator for a girl baby born 100 days prematurely, weighing 1 pound 8 oz. He prescribed its nurtured and care until normally developed, who has since married and reared 2 children of her own; a then rare medical record in conserving human life; pursued post-graduate studies in Boston University in 1911, specializing in treatment of children. Served as health officer of Milton, VT since 1924; has written much for publication; holds many professional, civic and other memberships; sings in church choir and has many and varied out-doors recreations. ⁶


Luman and Eleanor were enumerated in the 1900 Milton, Chittenden Co., VT federal census. He was a physician, age 35, she was 30. There had been 3 children born to the marriage, but only 2 survived, Cyrus B., 2, and Luman C. 1. Father Cyrus was also in the household.

Luman and Eleanor were enumerated in the 1920 Milton town, Chittenden Co., VT, federal census, ED 65. He was a physician, age 54, she was 50. Children in the household were Cyrus B. 22, Luman C. Jr. 21, Brainerd 19, and Ruth E. 15.

Luman C. and Eleanor B. were enumerated in the 1930 Milton, Chittenden Co., VT, federal census. He was 64, she was 60. Also in the household were Luman C. Jr. 31, and Ruth E. 25.

     Leonard Bernard Mott was born in September 1850 at Alburg, Grand Isle Co., VT.¹ He married Elvoretta Elvira Holcombe, daughter of Cyrus Holcombe and Almeda Celesta Hall.¹ Leonard Bernard Mott died on 23 January 1930 at Newport News, VA, at age 79.¹

     Elma Holcombe was born on 6 October 1863 at NY. She was the daughter of Cyrus Holcombe and Almeda Celesta Hall. Elma Holcombe married Rev. George E. Deuel on 2 October 1895. Elma Holcombe lived in 1947 at Homestead, Dade Co., FL. She died at Fuskin, FL.³

George and Elma were enumerated in the 1900 Montgomery, Franklin Co., VT, federal census. He was a clergyman age 31, she was 36. They had been married 5 years and there had been no children born to them.

George and Elma were enumerated in the 1930 Florida, Dade Co., FL, federal census. He was a minister, age 61, she was 66. There was no one else in the household.

     Rev. George E. Deuel was born in July 1868 at VT.¹ He married Elma Holcombe, daughter of Cyrus Holcombe and Almeda Celesta Hall, on 2 October 1895.

     Eleanor Pearl Brainard was born on 25 November 1869. She was the daughter of Aldis Owen Brainard and Jane Eliza French. Eleanor Pearl Brainard married Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe, son of Cyrus Holcombe and Almeda Celesta Hall, on 21 August 1895 at St. Albans, VT.¹

     Cyrus Brainerd Holcombe was born on 25 September 1897 at Milton, Chittenden Co., VT.³ He was the son of Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe and Eleanor Pearl Brainard.⁴ Cyrus Brainerd Holcombe married Hazel A. Cole, daughter of George P. Cole and Ida Thomas, on 30 June 1927.⁵ Cyrus Brainerd Holcombe died in April 1969 at Essex Junction, Chittenden Co., VT, at age 71.³

     Luman Clayton Holcombe Jr. was born on 17 November 1898 at Milton, Chittenden Co., VT.³ He was the son of Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe and Eleanor Pearl Brainard.⁴ Luman Clayton Holcombe Jr. died on 30 December 1970 at Tavares, Lake Co., FL, at age 72.³ He was buried at Milton Village Cemetery, Milton, Chittenden Co., VT.⁵

     Aldis Brainerd Holcombe was born on 20 November 1900 at Milton, Chittenden Co., VT.¹ He was the son of Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe and Eleanor Pearl Brainard.² Aldis Brainerd Holcombe married Ruth Ann Gray, daughter of Edwin L Gray and Mary Hills, on 14 August 1926.³ Aldis Brainerd Holcombe died in May 1984 at Milton, Chittenden Co., VT, at age 83.¹

     Ruth Eleanor Holcombe was born on 21 August 1904 at Milton, Chittenden Co., VT.³ She was the daughter of Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe and Eleanor Pearl Brainard.⁴ Ruth Eleanor Holcombe married J. Kenneth Wagner, son of John Wagner and Mae Mackin, on 21 September 1931.³ Ruth Eleanor Holcombe died on 3 February 1988 at VT at age 83.

     Hazel A. Cole was born on 31 March 1896 at Burlington, Chittenden Co., VT.¹ She was the daughter of George P. Cole and Ida Thomas. Hazel A. Cole married Cyrus Brainerd Holcombe, son of Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe and Eleanor Pearl Brainard, on 30 June 1927.¹

     George Luman Holcombe was born on 8 June 1929.¹ He was the son of Cyrus Brainerd Holcombe and Hazel A. Cole.² George Luman Holcombe died on 13 June 1988 at Melbourne, Brevard Co., FL, at age 59.¹

     Ruth Ann Gray was born on 2 July 1897 at Burlington, Chittenden Co., VT.^1,2 She was the daughter of Edwin L Gray and Mary Hills. Ruth Ann Gray married Aldis Brainerd Holcombe, son of Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe and Eleanor Pearl Brainard, on 14 August 1926.¹ Ruth Ann Gray died in February 1986 at Contoocook, Merrimack Co., NH, at age 88.²

     J. Kenneth Wagner was born at Fairfax, Franklin Co., VT. He was the son of John Wagner and Mae Mackin. J. Kenneth Wagner married Ruth Eleanor Holcombe, daughter of Dr. Luman Clayton Holcombe and Eleanor Pearl Brainard, on 21 September 1931.¹

     Amy Parson was born circa 1804 at VT. She married Elihu A. Holcombe, son of Carmi Holcombe and Apphia Holcombe.

     Truman Clark married Affia Holcombe, daughter of Carmi Holcombe and Apphia Holcombe. Truman clark is listed as a Freeman of Isle La Motte in 1798. He held numerous Town Offices, 1798-1820. He was Rep. from Isle La Motte to the Vt. Legislature, 1801, 1818-20. Per 1830 Census, he and family are living in the Town of Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT.

     Electa Clark was born in 1800 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT. She was the daughter of Truman Clark and Affia Holcombe. Electa Clark married Jonathan Holcombe, son of Amos Holcombe III and Mary Hall, on 19 June 1817 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT. Electa Clark died on 26 April 1846 at St. Lawrence, NY.

     Jonathan Holcombe was born in 1792. He was the son of Amos Holcombe III and Mary Hall. Jonathan Holcombe married Electa Clark, daughter of Truman Clark and Affia Holcombe, on 19 June 1817 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT. Jonathan Holcombe married Sarah Guthry. Jonathan Holcombe died in 1875 at Nora, IL.

Was known as General Holcomb on account of his services for the USA in the War of 1812. He lived in 1833 in island of North Hers in Lake Champlain, Grand Isle Co., VT. He moved in 1835 to a farm on Sarnac River near Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY. He moved about 1842 with three sons in a covered wagon to Illinois. The remainder of his family followed him from NY state to Illinois about a year later. ²

Jonathan and Sarah were enumerated in the 1850 Elizabeth, Jo Daviess Co., IL, federal census, stamped page 178. He is 51, a cooper, born in VT; she is 38, born in KY. Children in the household are Calrinda and Melinda 9, born in NY.

     McPherson indicates that she is not sure which of the Amos' moved to Chateaugay, NY, but she does continue the line here. McPherson indicates that the confused Amos is A-8-1-1-8-2-2 on page 107. Amos moved between 1812 and 1821 over the Chateaugay Trail to Chateaugay, Franklin Co., NY, where he is recorded in the 1850 census as a farmer. Amos Holcombe IV was the son of Amos Holcombe III and Mary Hall.
