James Holcomb Sr., 58 died Friday, May 5, 1995, in tucson, after being hit by an automobile.

He was born in New Haven on February 21, 1937, a son of Ernest Holcomb, Sr., of North Haven and the later Alicia O"Connell Holcomb. He was a self-employed carpenter. He was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Army.

In addition to his father, he is survived by two sons, James Holcomb, Jr. of West Haven, Conn., and Paul Holcomb of New Haven, Conn; two brothers, Ernest Holcomb Jr. of North Haven, Conn., and Robert Holcomb of Wallingford, Conn; three sisters, Jean Brown of Bellows Falls, Vt., Margaret Clark of North Haven, Conn., and Linda DeAntonio of Wallingford, Conn. He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Holcomb.

A funeral service will be held at the B.C. Bailey funeral lHome, 273 S. Elm St., Wallingford, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dawson Trenchard of the Church of the Resurrection officiating. A private burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park in Hamden.

Shirley Elizabeth (Castle) Messenger, 92, of East Granby, CT, widow of the late Alvin Lewis Messenger, was reunited with her beloved Alvin on Tuesday, December 27, 2022.

Born in East Granby on October 2, 1930, Shirley was the daughter of the late Howard and Hattie (Goddard) Castle. She married her beloved Alvin on February 3, 1946 and were married for 60 wonderful years, raising a family of four daughters and a son. Shirley was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, being a full-time stay at home Mom, not only raising her children but assisting in raising her grandchildren as well.

Shirley loved to be in the kitchen preparing her homemade meals and desserts for her family. She loved flowers and watching hummingbirds visit the feeders that she hung on her patio. She enjoyed gardening and canning and she canned the best tasting garlic dill pickles that her entire family loved.

Shirley leaves four daughters, Beverly Hathorne of Westfield, MA, Delores Rivera of Greensburg, PA, Roberta and her husband Charles Olszewski of East Granby, and Bonnie and her husband James Montemerlo of Windsor Locks, CT; a son, Alvin Messenger, Jr. of East Granby; nine grandchildren, Connie Maryea, Timothy Hathorne, Valerie Lawrence, David Rivera, Darlene Wilkinson, Sheri Weinberg, Charles Olszewski, Jr., Danielle and Christopher Montemerlo; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Alvin, Shirley was predeceased by seven brothers, Harry LeClair, Basil, Ernest, Robert, Herbert, George, and James Castle; three sisters, Louise Waite, Ethel Flagg, and Mary Little; two sons-in-law, Thomas Hathorne, Jr. and Hector Rivera; a grandson, Robert Hathorne; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Maryea.

Services will be private. Burial will be in Granby Cemetery. Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home in Granby has care of the arrangements.

MANTUA - Dorothy E. Toth, 81, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at her home after a long illness. Born March 8, 1917 in Akron, she was the daughter of Henry and Clara (Elliott) Barnett.

She had been a Mantua resident since 1957. Mrs. Toth retired in 1982 from Mantaline Corp., where she had been a cost accountant since 1965. An avid reader and an animal lover, she also enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her son, Ralph E. (Ann) Dumont, Jr. of Mentor; daughters, Dorothy C. Kobus of Houston, Texas, Laura L. (Harvey Dean) McGarry of Allentown, Pa; and Nancy C. Dumont of Mantua, with whom she shared her home; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, John Barnett of Coeburn, Va; and sister, Karolyn Miller of Mantua. Her first husband, Ralph E. Dumont, died in 1961. Her second husband, Frank A. Toth, died in 1967. Four brothers and one sister also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Will Stackhouse officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Mantua.

Philip McKenney Grant married Selma Elvira Larson on 7 October 1951 at Roxbury, Litchfield Co., CT. Philip McKenney Grant died on 9 March 2023 at Melrose, Hartford Co., CT, at age 96.

Philip M. Grant, age 96, of the Melrose section of East Windsor, widower of Selma (Larson) Grant, died at home on March 9, 2023. He was born on June 4, 1926 to the late Clyde and Lois (Candage) Grant, and was a resident of Melrose all his life. He owned and operated the family dairy farm until his retirement in 1991. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in South Windsor in 1944 and then served in the Navy until the end of World War II. He graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Agriculture in 1949, where he met his wife Selma, to whom he was married for 69 years.

Phil was an avid reader and a train buff. He and Selma took many interesting trips on the train and other travels including to Sweden and Hawaii. He was a life-long member of the Broad Brook Congregational Church, and at one time served on the East Windsor Planning and Zoning Commission. He belonged for many years to the dairy cooperatives CMPA, Yankee Milk and Agrimark. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, was at one time president of the Hartford County Farm Bureau, and also served on the State Board of Directors. He was the last surviving student of the Melrose one-room schoolhouse. Phil is survived by his children: Lois Audinot and her husband Vicente of Melrose, son-in-law Stanley Chandler of Melrose, George Grant and his wife Leslie of Somers, and Donald Grant and his wife Ruth of Melrose. He also leaves six granddaughters: Christa and husband Matthew, Signe and husband Julian, Shiloh and husband Christopher, Kathryn and partner Eric, Christine, and Natalie and husband Michael, and step-grandson Jason. Also, six great-granddaughters: Anna, Sarai, Brynja, Noelle, Elia and Camille. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Elizabeth Chandler and his sister Elva Collins.

The family wishes to thank Comfort Keepers of Enfield, especially Roselyn Emmanuel, for their care of Phil; and also the Visiting Nurse & Health Services of Connecticut, especially Eileen, Maria and Marie. Calling hours will be held at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapel, 61 South Rd., Enfield, CT 06082 on Friday, March 24 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm; the memorial service will be held at the same location on Saturday, March 25 at 11:00 am.

Ipswich - Walter W. Holcomb, 77, of Ipswich, formerly of Beverly, passed away Sunday evening, March 19, 2023 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. He was the husband of Susan G. (Gilbert) Holcomb.

Born in Springfield, Missouri, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Worth) Holcomb. Walt was a graduate of Branson High School with the class of 1964. He continued his education by attending trade school where he earned his Master Plumbing license.

An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Navy. Walter was a self-employed Master Plumber locally for many years. He was also a dedicated member of the Freemasons.

In addition to his wife with whom he shared thirty-two years of marriage, he is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Anne Ebert of Cape Carteret, NC and Lori Teheen and her husband, Michael of Ipswich; one son, Bryan Cunningham and his wife Marci of Salem; five grandchildren, Cairo, Aurelia and Zennon Teheen and Eleanor and Easton Ebert and one brother, Grant Holcomb of Branson, MO. He was also predeceased by one brother, John Holcomb.

His graveside funeral service will be at Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich on Saturday, April 1st at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
