Sabra Beach Godard1

     Sabra Beach Godard was born on 23 November 1922 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Harvy Edwin Godard and Anna Belle Green. Sabra Beach Godard married Frederck Frank Newberth Jr. on 10 August 1946 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.2 Sabra Beach Godard married Raymond F. Widlak. Sabra Beach Godard died on 19 March 2018 at The Stone House, Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 95.1

Sabra Beach Godard Newberth Widlak, 95, of Newington and Granby, CT died peacefully with her family by her side on March 19, 2018. She was the daughter of Harvy Edwin Godard and Anna Belle Green Godard and was the first Caesarian birth in Granby, CT on November 23, 1922.

Sabra was the widow of Frederick F. Newberth Jr. and Raymond F. Widlak. Sabra attended schools in West Hartford and graduated from Hall High School class of 1941 and went on to graduate from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. She was a nursery school teacher for many years during World War II. She married Frederick Frank Newberth, Jr. in 1946 and together they owned with Harvy Godard, her Father and later with her daughters, Carla Newberth Bue and Nancy Conners The Godard Insurance Agency in West Hartford Center for 84 years.

Sabra and Fred moved to Newington in 1951 where she was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout helper, PTO member, Room Mother, member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, Sunday school teacher and member of the Newington Garden Club for many years. As a member of the Embroiderers Guild she was an avid knitter, crocheter, needlepointer, and embroiderer and received many first-place ribbons from the Big E in West Springfield, MA and the DAR American Heritage fiber arts contest in Washington, DC. She enjoyed creating items from recycled plastic bags of many colors. As a devoted 75-year member of the Sarah Whitman Hooker Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution she served on many committees and organized countless parties, house tours, luncheons and fundraisers for her chapter and the CTDAR. Sabra was also a member of the Founders of Hartford and descends from 26 Founders. Sabra loved history and family history and was a life member of the Salmon Brook Historical Society in Granby. As an avid bridge player and a member of many bridge clubs and hosted many lovely parties over the years. Her favorite drink was Maker's Mark Bourbon, and she enjoyed visiting the distillery in Loretto, KY. Sabra loved pigs, pansies, and Boston Terriers and has lovely collections of each. She had a special love of the CT shoreline and spent many summers in Old Lyme and Westbrook. Sabra was a fun-loving person and was loved by so many people. She was known for her wonderful themed parties which she enjoyed planning and giving.

After the death of her second husband, Raymond F. Widlak in Newington, CT she moved to The Stone House, her family homestead in Granby, which was built by her Hayes ancestors in 1832. Her Godard family settled in Granby in 1643.

Sabra is survived by her three children: Carla Ann Newberth Bue and her husband, Richard of West Hartford, Frederick F. Newberth, III and his wife, Dorothy of West Hartford, and Nancy Rose Conners and her husband, Robert, of Newington. She is survived by four grandchildren, Caralynn Grace Conners of Newington, Dr. Catherine Anna Bue-Hepner and her husband, Clinton of Worcester, MA, Thomas Frederick Conners and his wife, Vanessa of Newington, and Jonathan Malcolm Conners of Midland, TX. She is survived by 4 great grandchildren, Lailah Christopher, Frederick Carl Hepner, Bowie Conners and Anders Richard Hepner and her doggie, Winnah. Sabra leaves her cousins, Melba Griffin, William S. Hart and Nancy Redway Ford. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Frederick F Newberth, Jr, her second husband of 16 years, Raymond F. Widlak, and their late dog Ms. Winnie of Winneker Ledge, and her cousins, Robert Forsyth, Stuart Forsyth, Jane Holcomb, Marion Clark, Jane Ellsworth, Albert Redway Jr., Fred Griffin and Henry Griffin.

She wishes to thank her family for all their assistance is helping her remain in her homestead and special thanks to Nancy and Robert Conners and Caralynn Grace Conners for always being there. The family wishes to thank Irina Ciloci, Ada May Parmelee, Brad Biskup P.A. and Dr. Michael Jiménez for their devoted care during the last few years. Sabra wishes her family and friends have a toast to her at cocktail hour and think of her drinking her Makers Mark bourbon. Burial service was held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations maybe made to the Ellsworth Memorial Association for the Oliver Ellsworth House owned by CTDAR PO BOX 791 Windsor, CT 06095-0791.
