William Griffith Jennings was born on 28 March 1824 at Versailles, Ripley Co., IN. He was the son of Lemuel Stebbins Jennings and Martha Steele. William Griffith Jennings died in 1899 at Thomasville, GA. From the Cooley Genealogy: William Griffith Jennings, who used in his later life only the name of William Jennings, grew up in Vermillion Co., Ill., in a pioneer country. He moved to Kentucky where he had relatives, became a lawyer, and made an early marriage to a young wife who died, leaving a small son, William Jennings. Eventually William Jennings, the father, settled in Georgia, buying farm lands, a dwelling-house and a mill near Ringgold, Catoosa Co. His property was burned during the Civil War and he moved to Atlanta, where he became a leading business man, dealing in real estate and insurance, later having a business of building-materials, hardware and other architectural supplies. His home place in Atlanta was four acres fronting on Jackson street, bounded on each side by Rice and currier streets, and in the rear by the road which became the boulevard. The house, a large white one, stood on a hill and was surrounded by large oak trees. This place, under Mr. Jennings' supervision, became one of the show-places of Atlanta, and was particularly noted for its fruit trees of almost tropical luxuriance. About 1880, Mr. Jennings bought a plantation in Calhoun Co., Ga., and about 1882 removed to Thomasville, where he went into the nursery business, and where he died in 1899.
