Edmund B. H. Holcomb was born in Simsbury and educated in the district schools. He grew up on a farm and when a young man peddled Yankee notions throughout the states of New York and Massachusetts, as well as in Connecticut. Later he engaged in mercantile business in North Adams, Massachusetts until 1849, when he became an argonaut, voyaging to California in a sailing vessel around Cape Horn. After two years prospecting, with fair success, he returned to his native home, making the trip by water and located in Granby where he bought a farm and spent the balance of his life engaging principally in general farming. He greatly improved his farm, died there in 1878 and was buried in Simsbury.

Evidently, our Grandpa did not like shoes much in his youth, as the story was told that he would hitch his horse and wagon, don his Sunday best, and travel bare-footed all the way from Barkhamsted to East Hartford. He would stop, just before his arrival, pick some flowers, and THEN put on his shoes.'

"The portrait of 'Auntie Lou' (the same portrait that is published in 'Granby Connecticut, A Brief History 1786-1986' which lists her dates 1888-1904) hung in the family home throughout the next generation. during that time the two-family farmhouse was occupied by Charles and Lena (Erving) Case; Raymond Erving Case (their son, and sister of Lou, his wife and his two daughters.
"Ray's daughters, Margaret and Gertrude, both remember and relate that 'Auntie Lou's' portrait was always displayed in a prominent place in the home. Though I have no memories of my grandfather ever speaking of his sister, Margaret (my mother) tells that her father was evidently very saddened by Lou's death, often speaking of her with great admiration. He always missed her, never really getting over herr youthful death. Several copies of 'Auntie Lou's' portrait remain in the family to this day.
"Upon asking my mother for any further information that she could offer, she told me that she believes that 'Auntie Lou' died of a kidney ailment possibly called 'Bright's Disease'. She also told that upon Lou's death, Raymond left Mt. Herman's Academy (the high school he was attending in Massachusetts) to return home to be with his parents. Due to his parents' intense grief at the loss of their daughter, and he being the sole remaining child, Raymond did not return to Mt. Herman's to complete his schooling. My mother believes that it was her father's decision to remain on the farm with his parents.
"Ray married six years later, his bride moving to live with his family on the Case farm, my mother was born seven years into this marriage.
