When he was 17, his father secured his admission to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point through U.S. Congressman Thomas L. Hamer of Ohio. Ada spent her early life in Sweden while her father was minister there under President James Buchanan. She was a vestryman in St. John's Church, Lafayette, IN, the first woman ever to hold the office of vestryman in the Episcopal Church.
In her DAR papers she cited Bible Records in the possession of Mrs. Elizabeth Ellsworth, widow of Frederick Ellsworth.
Ada also campaigned for women's sufferage, serving on the board of directors of the Woman's Franchise League of Indiana, which, after suffrage was granted, became the Indiana League of Women Voters. She wa the first president of the Tippecanoe County League of Women Voters, holding that office from 1919 until 1932 when she became honorary president.
Thomas practiced law with his brothers Charles B. and William Vaughn Stuart. He was also a member of the Lafayette School Board.
