Clarence graduated from Brown University in Providence, RI, in 1888, where he was the Class Orator, and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He then graduated from Rochester Theological Seminary in Rochester, NY, in 1891. He received a Doctor of Divinity Degree in 1901. He was after that Pastor of the Lake Avenue Baptist Church in Rochester from 1891 to 1909. The church grew and flourished while he was there. He was the secretary of the International Committee of the YMCA, 1915-1929. He was the president and a professor at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, 1915-1929. He became the 10th president of Brown University in 1929, and lived in Providence. He was a Trustee of Peddie School, and of Worchester Academy. He attained the 33rd degree in Masonry.

      John Baptiste Barber was also known as John Baptiste Barbour. He was born on 24 June 1869.¹ He was the son of Judge Heman Humphrey Barber and Almira Ann Barker.¹

John graduated from Brown University in 1891, and went into business in Batavia, NY, from 1891 to 1893. He then resumed his education, and graduated from Rochester Theological Seminary in Rochester, NY, in 1896. He was a Baptist minister and held pastorates at First Church in Geneva, NY, 1896-1897, First Church of Syracuse, 1897-1900, the First Church of Mumford, NY, 1900 to 1905, the Calvary Church, Erie, PA, 1906 to 1914. Then he became a representative for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co.. of Rochester, from 1914 on. He was an ardent worker in the field of temperance. He was especially strong among the young people.²
