     Lucy Humphrey was born on 19 September 1780.¹ She was the daughter of Solomon Humphrey Jr. and Hannah Brown.¹ Lucy Humphrey died on 16 February 1809 at age 28.¹

     Rev. Luther Humphrey was born on 7 October 1783.¹ He was the son of Solomon Humphrey Jr. and Hannah Brown.¹ Rev. Luther Humphrey married Sarah H. Lawton circa January 1815.¹ Rev. Luther Humphrey married Julia (?) on 22 October 1849.¹ Rev. Luther Humphrey died on 16 May 1871 at age 87.¹

Luther and his wives had no children.

With only the ordinary educational advantages of he common school, during his minority, Luther Humphrey began to prepare for college at about he age of twenty-four, and graduated at Middlebury College, Vt., in 1813. In 1814, he entered the ministry, and, in March, 1815, was ordained as a Missionary to the Western Reserve, Ohio, --then called new Connecticut. In the following May, he set out on his way to Ohio, visiting schools or preaching almost every day on the journey, so that he did not reach his place of destination till the 2d or August. He was installed pastor in Burton, Geauga Co., Ohio, 25 Oct, 1815. Late the same year, he returned to Becket, Mass., for his wife; and, the January following, with his goods packed in a wagon, started with his wife and youngest sister for his parish, which they reached in forty-two days. They settled in a "hired log-house; borrowed two chairs, made three stools, ate upon a chest, slept on the floor, and were truly happy." He was here settled over two townships five miles square, and labored half of the time as a missionary. He continued here in this work thirteen years; subsequently, for a short time, he labored in Vienna, Trumbull Co., Ohio, with great spiritual success. He afterward received and accepted a call to a pastorate in Connecticut, where he remained two years. In 1830, he removed to Michigan, and resumed pastoral and missionary work in Cass County, then a wilderness with a sparse population, with only one bridge, --and that a poor one of logs -- across any of the streams between there and Detroit, a distance of 170 miles. This region was mostly without roads, the points of the compass being the chief guide across prairies and through forests. On one occasion, in making a journey of thirty miles in a sleigh, in midwinter, to fulfill an appointment to preach, he lost his way in the forest at night, his sleigh became locked fast by a tree, and he was compelled to remain there till daylight, his feet and hands becoming frozen. He proceeded on his journey however, and preached to his waiting congregation at two o'clock the next day. On this field his first wife died, and he married his second. They removed to Windahm, Portage Co., O., where he resided until his death. In this arduous work he had been engaged for about thirty-six years. He was a glorious type of the American pioneer clergyman, and a noble example of Christian zeal, benevolence and faith. His widow resided in 1881 in Windham, O.²

     Sarah H. Lawton married Rev. Luther Humphrey, son of Solomon Humphrey Jr. and Hannah Brown, circa January 1815.¹ Sarah H. Lawton died on 1 April 1849 at MI.¹

     Julia (?) was born on 15 January 1796.¹ She married (?) Treat. Julia (?) married Rev. Luther Humphrey, son of Solomon Humphrey Jr. and Hannah Brown, on 22 October 1849.¹

     Candace Humphrey was born on 11 July 1793.¹ She was the daughter of Solomon Humphrey Jr. and Hannah Brown.¹ Candace Humphrey died in September 1871 at unmarried, Farmington, Hartford Co., CT, at age 78.¹

     Naomi Humphrey was born on 28 September 1794 at Bristol, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Solomon Humphrey Jr. and Hannah Brown.¹ Naomi Humphrey married Henry Barber, son of Jonathan Barber and Abi Merrill, on 2 April 1817 at Barkhamsted, Litchfield Co., CT.^1,2 Naomi Humphrey died on 7 January 1863 at Canton Center, CT, at age 68.¹

Naomi taught school in 1812 in Burlington, Ct., and, in 1816, at Barkhamsted, Ct., to which place her father had removed. She was married at his residence by William Taylor, Esq. Naomi and Henry settled in Canton, Ct; in 1820, removed to what is now called Canton Center.

The nobility, grace and purity of Mrs. Naomi Barbour's character are faithfully delineated by her son, Judge Heman Humphrey Barbour, of Hartford, Ct., in a work entitled My Wife and My Mother, published in 1864, which contains much of her correspondence. Their family are well-known as worthy and influential members of society.³

      Henry Barber was also known as Henry Barbour. He was born on 12 March 1793 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 He was the son of Jonathan Barber and Abi Merrill. Henry Barber married Naomi Humphrey, daughter of Solomon Humphrey Jr. and Hannah Brown, on 2 April 1817 at Barkhamsted, Litchfield Co., CT.^1,2 Henry Barber died on 12 April 1868 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT, at age 75.^1,2

     Clarinda Barber was born in 1789.¹ She was the daughter of Jonathan Barber and Abi Merrill.¹ Clarinda Barber married Col. Miles Foote on 28 November 1807.^1,2 Clarinda Barber died on 25 September 1864.¹

The Humphrey Genealogy gives the marriage date of Miles and Clarinda as 28 Nov. 1807, the Barber Genealogy gives it as 11 Nov. 1807.

     Col. Miles Foote was born on 1 April 1788 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 He married Clarinda Barber, daughter of Jonathan Barber and Abi Merrill, on 28 November 1807.^1,2 Col. Miles Foote died on 5 September 1878 at age 90.^1,2

      Clarinda Barber was also known as Clarinda Barbour. She was born on 17 April 1818 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey.¹ Clarinda Barber married Franklin Ruel Perry on 2 May 1838 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.² Clarinda Barber died on 30 April 1886 at age 68.²

Clarinda and Franklin first resided at Canton. He was a schoolteacher and farmer. In 1855 they moved to Colliinsville (in Canton) whee he worked for the Collins Company, makers of axes and other tools.³

      Judge Heman Humphrey Barber was also known as Judge Heman Humphrey Barbour. He was born on 19 July 1820 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey.¹ Judge Heman Humphrey Barber married Frances Elizabeth Merrill, daughter of Merlin Merrill and Clarissa Newton, on 23 October 1845.¹ Judge Heman Humphrey Barber married Almira Ann Barker, daughter of William Frazer Barker, on 9 May 1865.² Judge Heman Humphrey Barber died on 29 June 1875 at age 54.²

Heman attended the Amherst Academy at Amherst, MA. He later went to read law in Indianapolis with his distant cousin Lucian Barbour.³

After their marriage, Heman and Frances went to Indiana, and resided in Columbus, Bartholomew County, where Mr. Barbour had formerly been engaged in the practice of law, he having been admitted to the bar in June, 1841. In 1845, a short time before his marriage, he had been elected Senator for three years.

In May, 1846, there was a call for three regiments of volunteers from Indiana to serve in the Mexican war, and, after mature deliberation, it was decided that he should enlist. The company to which he belonged was soon after filled, accepted, and ordered to New Albany, where it remained till July 8th, when it was sent forward, by the way of New Orleans, to the Rio Grande. Mrs. Barbour went to New Albany and remained with her husband until July 7th, and soon afterward returned to her old home in Barkhamsted. There he followed her in the fall, having obtained leave of absence from his regiment, which was encamped on the Rio Grande, without any prospect of active service. He returned to his military duties in February, 1847, and was mustered out of service at New Orleans, June 26th of that year. He held a commission as Lieutenant.

In the latter part of 1847, they settled once more in their western home, and Mr. Barbour resumed the practice of his profession. In 1849, he was ordained an elder of the Presbyterian church in Columbus, of which they were both members. He was also teacher of the bible class, and chorister. A few months later, on account of continued sickness in his family, he was led to decide upon a removal to Connecticut, and in the spring of 1850 we find them residing in Hartford. This change of residence proved to be a favorable one, bringing health to the household, and, gradually, success in business affairs. But in 1857, they were sorely afflicted in the death of two of their sons, and, in 1861, in the death of their only daughter. The loss of these children was borne by the mother with great Christian resignation, but little did her friends realize that she would so soon follow them to the grave. She died in Hartford and, with her infant son, was buried near her beloved children who had passed on before her. For an account of her noble life and character we must refer the reader to the work entitled My Wife and My Mother, which contains many tributes to her worth.⁴

In 1858 Heman was elected Probate Judge of the Hartford District. He was a member of the Baptist Church in Hartford, and worked for the Temperance movement. He was also a director fo the State Prison He laid out a street in Hartford and built a home there, on what is now known as Barbour Street. Heman led the family, including his brothers, to spell the name Barbour, due to the influence of Lucian Barbour in Indianapolis. Thus two fairly distantly related branches of the Barber family, both from Simsbury/Canton, changed their name to Barbour, apparently all because of Lucian's association with the distinguished Virginia Barbours.³

      Judge Henry Stiles Barber was also known as Judge Henry Stiles Barbour. He was born on 2 August 1822 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey.¹ Judge Henry Stiles Barber married Pamela J. Bartholemew, daughter of John Morse Bartholemew and Pauline Fuller, on 25 November 1851.² Judge Henry Stiles Barber died on 21 September 1891 at age 69.²

Henry resided at Walcottsville, in Torrington CT, and later at Hartford. He was a lawyer in Torrington until 1870, and then went to Hartford to practice law with his brother Heman. While in Torrington he was Topwn Clerk, and a Judge of Probate. He served in the Connecticut House in 1850, 1865, and the Connecticut Senate in 1870.³

     Lucy Barber was born on 7 May 1824 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey.¹

     Pluma Barber was born on 17 September 1826 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey.¹

     Juliaette Barber was born on 14 November 1828 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey.¹

      Judge Sylvester Barber was also known as Judge Sylvester Barbour. He was born on 20 January 1831 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey.¹ Judge Sylvester Barber married Frances Amelia Collin, daughter of John Francis Collin and Jane Tullar, on 27 November 1860 at Hillsdale, NY.² Judge Sylvester Barber died on 4 January 1916 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT, at age 84.²

Sylvester resided at Hillsdale before moving to Osage, IA, in 1854. In 1861 they moved to New Hartford, CT. And still later they lived at Ansonia and Hartford, CT. Sylvester trained at Poughkeepsie Law School. He was a lawyer, with his brother Heman, in Hartford. He was one of the oldest and most respected lawyers in Hartford.³

     Naomi Eliza Barber was born on 3 February 1833 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey.¹

      Edward Payson Barber was also known as Edward Payson Barbour. He was born on 23 September 1834 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey.¹ Edward Payson Barber married Emma Jane Barber, daughter of Alonzo Barber and Hepzibah (?), on 5 April 1860 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.² Edward Payson Barber died on 5 August 1895 at age 60.²

Edward was a farmer and by necessity a teacher in the winter, in Canton. He became a grocer in Ansonia.³

     Franklin Ruel Perry was born on 30 August 1813.¹ He married Clarinda Barber, daughter of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey, on 2 May 1838 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Franklin Ruel Perry died on 12 December 1878 at age 65.¹

     Oliver Franklin Perry was born on 11 October 1839.¹ He was the son of Franklin Ruel Perry and Clarinda Barber.¹

Oliver and Laura resided at Canton.²

     Esther Clarinda Perry was born on 28 March 1842.¹ She was the daughter of Franklin Ruel Perry and Clarinda Barber.¹

Esther was a schoolteacher in Hartford.²

     Wilbert Warren Perry was born on 20 December 1851.¹ He was the son of Franklin Ruel Perry and Clarinda Barber.¹

Wilbert resided at Hartford, CT, and was a lawyer.²

     Frances Elizabeth Merrill was born on 25 May 1824 at Barkhamsted, Litchfield Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Merlin Merrill and Clarissa Newton. Frances Elizabeth Merrill married Judge Heman Humphrey Barber, son of Henry Barber and Naomi Humphrey, on 23 October 1845.¹ Frances Elizabeth Merrill died on 17 October 1863 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT, at age 39.¹ She was buried on 21 October 1863 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.

     Rev. R. S. Hazen witnessed the marriage of Frances Elizabeth Merrill and Judge Heman Humphrey Barber on 23 October 1845.¹

      Joseph Lane Barber was also known as Joseph Lane Barbour. He was born on 18 December 1846 at Barkhamsted, Litchfield Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Judge Heman Humphrey Barber and Frances Elizabeth Merrill.¹

      Rev. Henry Merlin Barber was also known as Rev. Henry Merlin Barbour. He was born on 29 May 1848 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Judge Heman Humphrey Barber and Frances Elizabeth Merrill.¹

Henry graduated from Trinity College, Hartford, in 1870, and received a Master of Arts Degree from there in 1873. He was an episcopal Clergyman in the Trinity Church of Madalin NY 1872-1874, the Trinity Church of Woodside, Newark, NJ, 1874-1876, and the Trinity Church of Trenton, NJ, after that. Henry and Harriet had fifteen children.²

      Henry Grosvenor Barber was also known as Henry Grosvenor Barbour. He was born on 15 November 1873.¹ He was the son of Rev. Henry Merlin Barber and Harriet Deming.¹ Henry Grosvenor Barber died at a young age..

      Elizabeth Sumner Barber was also known as Elizabeth Sumner Barbour. She was born on 21 July 1877.¹ She was the daughter of Rev. Henry Merlin Barber and Harriet Deming.¹

      Catherine Hutchinson Barber was also known as Catherine Hutchinson Barbour. She was born on 15 August 1879.¹ She was the daughter of Rev. Henry Merlin Barber and Harriet Deming.¹

      Margaret Mary Clymer Barber was also known as Margaret Mary Clymer Barbour. She was born on 31 May 1887.¹ She was the daughter of Rev. Henry Merlin Barber and Harriet Deming.¹

      Rev. Heman Humphrey Barber was also known as Rev. Heman Humphrey Barbour. He was born on 22 June 1850 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.² He was the son of Judge Heman Humphrey Barber and Frances Elizabeth Merrill.² Rev. Heman Humphrey Barber married Francis Emma Luther.³

      James Bolles Barber was also known as James Bolles Barbour. He was born on 17 December 1851 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Judge Heman Humphrey Barber and Frances Elizabeth Merrill.¹ James Bolles Barber died on 5 October 1869 at age 17.¹

      Rev. Thomas Seymour Barber was also known as Rev. Thomas Seymour Barbour. He was born on 28 July 1853 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Judge Heman Humphrey Barber and Frances Elizabeth Merrill.¹ Rev. Thomas Seymour Barber died on 26 September 1915 at age 62.¹

Thomas graduated from Brown University in Providence, RI, in 1874,and from Rochester Theological Seminary in 1877. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Brown. he became a Baptist minister. He was pastor at the First Church, Brockport, NY, 1877-1881, at the North Orange, NJ, church, 1881-1883, at the First Church in Fall River, MA, 1883-1895, and at the First Church of Brookline, MA, 1896-1898. In 1895 he received a Doctor of Divinity Degree. He then became the foreign secretary to the American Baptist Mission Union. He also was a Trustee of the Newton Theological Institute. He lived in the later years in Wollaston, MA.²
