James was a farmer until moving to California in the early 1940's for Grachia's health, settling in Lynwood. He worked in various grocery markets until becoming a manager at Jim Dandy's, which later became Lucky's Market. After his retirement, he and Grachia moved to Beaumont, California, where Grachia's health worsened and they moved to Sun City, California, in 1973 to be close to their two children who lived in nearby Canyon Lake. Grachia died one year later and James remarried five years later at the age of 74 years to Beatrice Hansen who was divorced with seven children and was 26 years younger than James.1
