Albert was a building contractor and in 1871 he moved his family from Matawan, Michigan, to Pentwater where he went to build a mill. In 1874 he obtained the contract for a mill in Shelby and the family left Pentwater. This was the year that one of the strangest visitations that ever befell a rural community took place. Hundreds of thousands of passenger pigeons swooped down on Shelby. The skies were dark with the birds as they built their nests in what was then a wooded district east of the town. That visit of the pigeons in 1874 and again in 1876 and 1878 brought fame and also Shelby's first boom. The birds were trapped by thousands daily and shipped to the markets. Mr. Royal operated a pigeon warehouse from which the birds were shipped. He later entered the drug business in which he remained until his death.3
