He was enumerated in the 1900 census in the household of his parents as "Jeremiah F. Holcomb." His death record on ancestry.com shows the parents of James Franlkin are Ezekiel and Margaret.

Frank J. and Salena B. were enumerated in the 1910 Pleasant, Clay Co., WV federal census, (ED 5, page 12A). He was a farmer, age 30, she was 25. Children in the household were Mary H. 4, Charles F. 2, Elcy C. 5 months. On the same page were enumerated William E. and famly, Ezkil and family, George and family, Barley and family, and Tyrouse and family. William S. and family were nearby.

James Franklin Holcombe registered for the draft on 12 September 1918; he lived in Fola, Clay Co., WV and worked for the Gauley Coal Co. He was born 5 September 1882. His nearest relative was Salina Holcomb.

They were again enumerated in Pleasant in 1920. He was a coal miner, age 37, she was 35. Children in the household were Hallie 14, Charley S. 12, Elcie C. 10, Ida M. 8, Clyde C 5, and Henry C. 3 months. In 1930 they were again enumerated in Pleasant. J. Franklin worked in a saw mill, age 47, she was 45. Children were Charles 22, Ida 18, Clyde 15, Carl 13, Earl 10, Glenn 7, Kent 5, and Doris M. 11 months. In 1940 in Pleasant still, J. Franklin was a saw mill sawyer, age 58, whe was 55. Children in the household were Clyde 25, Glen 17, Delbert 15, Madeline 10, and Nellie 7. All were born in WV.

There are two "James Frank(lin) Holcombs" living in Pleasant in 1940 and earlier years that were nearly the same age. "James Frank Holcomb" registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 in Clay C., WV. He worked for the Elliott Splint Coal Co. in Clay and listed his nearest relative as Chessie. This James Franklin Holcomb and wife Chessie were enumerated in the 1940 Pleasant census just two pages away (29B) from James Franklin and Selena (30B). Their children enumerated in 1940 were Dimple 21, Freida 19, J. Ray 16, Junior F. 14, Madeline 11, Leon 8, and Eva 4.
