     Jane Calista Hayes was born on 21 September 1833.¹ She was the daughter of Milton Hayes and Alvira M. Marvin.¹ Jane Calista Hayes married Lemuel Clinton Gates, son of Samuel Gates and Lucy Cowdry, on 18 October 1853 at North Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹

Lemuel and Jane C. were enumerated in the 1860 Campton, Kane Co., IL, federal census. He was a farmer, age 30, she was 26. The only child in the household was Nellie 4.

J. C. and Jane were enumerated in the 1880 Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO, federal census. He was 50, she was 47. Children in the household were Mammie 18, Lula 16, and Marvin 3.

     Zaccheus Hayes II was born on 25 January 1835.¹ He was the son of Milton Hayes and Alvira M. Marvin.¹ Zaccheus Hayes II married Elizabeth Willis, daughter of Horace Willis and Amy Miller, on 8 October 1861 at Blackberry, IL.¹

ZACCHEUS HAYES, farmer, Section 9, P. O. Paola, was born in Connecticut in 1835, where he was brought up on a farm til twenty-one years of age, he then, in 1856, immigrated to Illinois and located in Kane County. He was married in that county in October, 1861, to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Horace Willis. They have two daughters-Amy A. and Alma M. Mr. Hayes came to Kansas in 1866 and purchased a farm of 190 acres in the town of Wea, Miami County; and in the fall of the following year moved his family to their new home. He was extensively engaged in growing and feeding stock, having an average herd of sixty steers and 200 hogs. In the fall of 1881, having purchased a farm of 110 acres lying adjacent to the village of Paola, on Section 9, he removed to this place, still retaining the ownership of the old farm in Wea. Mr. Hayes was soldier of the late war. He enlisted in September, 1861, as a private of Company I, Eighth Illinois Cavalry. Was promoted to the position of Orderly Sergeant of his company and served three years. Was attached to the army of the Potomac. He has held various positions of public honor and trust, the duties of which he has discharged with ability and fidelity. He was elected County Commissioner of Miami County in 1877 for one year; served that term, and was re-elected for the term of three years, serving in all four years.

Zaccheus and Elizabeth were enumerated in the 1880 Wea, Miami Co., KS, federal census. He was a farmer age 45, she was 38. Children in the household were Amy 11, and Almay 8.

      Lemuel Clinton Gates was also known as Jamnel Clinton Gates.¹ He was born on 16 April 1829 at Heartland, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Samuel Gates and Lucy Cowdry.¹ Lemuel Clinton Gates married Jane Calista Hayes, daughter of Milton Hayes and Alvira M. Marvin, on 18 October 1853 at North Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Margaret Alice Barlow was born on 12 May 1838 at MA.¹ She was the daughter of Rufus H. Barlow and Alice Hayes.¹ Margaret Alice Barlow married Ethan D. Dickinson on 21 October 1863.¹

Ethan and Margaret were enumerated in the 1880 Granville, Hampden Co., MA, federal census. He was a toy manufacturer age 44, she was 42. There were no children in the household.

     John Howard Barlow was born on 3 April 1846.¹ He was the son of Rufus H. Barlow and Alice Hayes.¹ John Howard Barlow died on 16 October 1848 at age 2.¹

     Ethan D. Dickinson was born circa 1835 at MA.^1,2 He married Margaret Alice Barlow, daughter of Rufus H. Barlow and Alice Hayes, on 21 October 1863.¹
