from an un-named paper:
We clip from the Port Clinton Reporter of Saturday last the following in reference to an affair which years ago created considerable excitement, not only at the the place where the deed is reported to have been committed, but also in this vicinity:
Thirty-seven years ago Mr. John Hopfinger, an uncle of Andrew of Andrew Hopfinger, suddenly disappeared and no trace of him could ever be found. He was boarding with a man by the name of Daniel Thorne (sic, Frederick Adam Thurn), who was accused of murdering him, and was arrested. Thorne had filled up a sell and suspicion was so strong that the people assembled and the well was dug out, and every nook and corner of his farm was searched to find the missing man; and finally Colonel Lockwood, at that time living in Port Clinton, ran Mr. Thorne out of town and when he was here on one occasion, with a rope in his hand with which he intended to hang him if he caught him.
It is claimed that mysterious lights were seen around Thorne's house for years afterward. This tradition was known to many residents of this county, and there are those yet living who claim to have seen the lights, and to have known of other weird and unearthly manifestations about the premises.
The affair had been almost forgotten, when a strange reported incident has recalled it, and created intense excitement. It is affirmed that Mr. Thomas Holcomb, an old citizen and respected farmer of Sandusky county, living up the Sandusky river, between here and Fremont, being near the point of death, confessed to having killed Mr. Hopfinger and buried him somewhere in the marsh. He had killed him for money which Hopfinger claimed to have about him. He is supposed to have had about $300, which at that time was a good sum of money for any one person to have.
Mr. Michael Hopfinger started on Monday to investigate the matter by going to see Holcomb, if alive, and to get the confession from his own lips, if possible.
LATER -- Later reports confirm the truth of the above. Mr. Thomas Holcomb is known by most old citizens of Sandusky county, and many of this county also. We believe he is known by nearly every old resident of Fremont. He has always, we think, been a man generally respected, of good character, and one who had many warm friends. It is said he is now eighty four years of age, and the murder was committed thirty-seven years ago. He has been, and at last advices still was, very sick. During two nights last week he exclaimed to his watchers: "I have killed a man," but would say no more, and it was not until Saturday night -- when he thought his life soon to be terminated -- that he made confession. He said that Hopfinger came to his house to stay all night; that he did not know the man, but supposed him to be a drover, from the fact that he seemed to have considerable money in his possession; that during the night he killed Hopfinger for the sake of his money, and buried his body in the marsh. This is the outline confession.
Mr. Hopfinger's friends and relatives will probably have full details soon of the strange and horrible crime that has been wrapped in mystery for thirty-seven years, while the criminal has seemingly prospered, and has walked uprightly and respected among men during the whole interval from the time of the murder until now.
