     Martin Holcombe was born on 27 April 1785. He was the son of Martin Holcombe and Hannah Alford. Martin Holcombe died on 19 November 1833 at age 48.

     Elizabeth Holcombe was the daughter of Martin Holcombe and Hannah Alford.

     Altissamena Holcombe was the daughter of Martin Holcombe and Hannah Alford.

     Hannah Holcombe was born in 1795. She was the daughter of Martin Holcombe and Hannah Alford. Hannah Holcombe married Bridgeman Griswold, son of Friend Griswold and Dorothy Weller, on 5 June 1811 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Hannah Holcombe died on 4 August 1829 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Bridgeman Griswold was born in 1791 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.² He was the son of Friend Griswold and Dorothy Weller.¹ Bridgeman Griswold married Hannah Holcombe, daughter of Martin Holcombe and Hannah Alford, on 5 June 1811 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ Bridgeman Griswold died on 9 October 1836.² He was buried at Elm Grove Cemetery, Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Samuel Holcombe was the son of Martin Holcombe and Hannah Alford.

     Maria Holcombe was the daughter of Martin Holcombe and Hannah Alford.

     Cherrissa Holcombe was born on 22 October 1800 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Martin Holcombe and Hannah Alford. Cherrissa Holcombe died on 7 January 1875 at age 74.

Ira and Clarissa were enumerated in the 1860 Windsor, Hartford Co., CT federal census, page 6. Ira was a farmer, age 59, Clarissa was 59. Daughter Sarah Holcombe was in the household with her husband and two children.

     Sarah A. Soper was born on 16 June 1833 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Ira Soper and Cherrissa Holcombe. Sarah A. Soper married Edwin Bascomb Holcombe, son of Hiram Holcombe and Almira Griswold, on 14 April 1852. Sarah A. Soper died on 15 November 1905 at Southington, Hartford Co., CT, at age 72.

     Edwin Bascomb Holcombe was born on 16 August 1830 at CT.² He was the son of Hiram Holcombe and Almira Griswold. Edwin Bascomb Holcombe married Sarah A. Soper, daughter of Ira Soper and Cherrissa Holcombe, on 14 April 1852. Edwin Bascomb Holcombe died on 18 February 1905 at age 74.

Edwin and Sarah were enumerated in the 1860 Windsor, Hartford Co., CT federal census. He was a house joiner age 30; she was 27. Children in the household were Sarah H. age 7, and Harriet A. 2. The were living with Sarah's family.

E. B. and Sarah were enumerated in the 1880 Southington, Hartford Co., CT, federal census, film T9-0099, page 77B. He was a pattern maker, age 49, she was 47. Children in the household were Hattie, 21, and Frank 6. Also in the household was daughter Sarah and her husband W. H. Barnes.

Edwin B. and Sarah A. were enumerated in the 1900 Southington, Hartford Co., CT, federal census. He was a pattern maker, age 69, she was 66. There were no children in the household.

     Hiram Frank Holcombe was born on 5 October 1873 at Southington, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Edwin Bascomb Holcombe and Sarah A. Soper. Hiram Frank Holcombe married Mabel Florine Cadwell, daughter of Charles A. Cadwell and Eloise Baker Williams, on 12 October 1909 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.³ Hiram Frank Holcombe lived at 51 Leyfred Terrace, Springfield, MA. He died on 22 May 1962 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA, at age 88.⁴ He was buried at South End Cemetery, Southington, Hartford Co., CT.⁴

H. F. was educated in the public schools and the "Lewis High School", in Southington, Ct; a Graduate of the Yale Business College, New Haven, Conn; his earlier years, after completing his education, were spent in the grocery business in hartford and Meriden, Conn., becoming, in 1900, traveling salesman for a large N.Y. wholesale house, and then for a large Importing Tea and Coffee House -- Delano and Potter, of Boston, Mass. In 1905 he became Ticket Agent at the Union Station, Springfield, Mass., for the N.Y. Central R.R. Since 1910 he has been an auctioneer and appraiser and has developed a large business in that line. He was a signifigant contributor to the Seaver and McPherson Genealogies. His collection of informatin is now stored at the Connecticut Historical Society. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church; they lived at 51 Leyford Ter., Springfield, MA.

     Mabel Florine Cadwell was born on 7 August 1876 at Southington, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Charles A. Cadwell and Eloise Baker Williams. Mabel Florine Cadwell married Hiram Frank Holcombe, son of Edwin Bascomb Holcombe and Sarah A. Soper, on 12 October 1909 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.² Mabel Florine Cadwell died on 8 July 1954 at Chatham, Barnstable Co., MA, at age 77.² She was buried at South End Cemetery, Southington, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Lucy Ware Webb was born on 28 August 1831 at Chillicothe, OH. She was the daughter of James Webb and Maria Cook. Lucy Ware Webb married President Rutherford Birchard Hayes, son of Rutherford Hayes and Sophia Birchard, on 30 December 1852 at Cincinnati, OH. Lucy Ware Webb died on 25 June 1889 at Fremont, OH, at age 57. She was buried at Spiegel Grove, Fremont, OH.

     Recorded as illegitimate son of Sarah Jacob without other surname for himself; bap at Mansfield at age 18 as Roger Cornwall, son of Sarah Jacob alias Birchard, who had married when Roger was 13 months old, Elias Birchard. When Elias died Roger was helplful tohis mother in settling his step-father's estate,then called Roger Birchard, and in 1781 he actually received the double share of an eldest son. Also see Robert C. Anderson in TAG 52:140 f. Roger Birchard was also known as Roger Cornwall. He was born on 25 December 1756 at Mansfield, CT. He was the son of Sarah Jacob. Roger Birchard married Drusilla Austin, daughter of Daniel Austin and Abigail Phelps, on 2 December 1790 at Wilmington, VT. Roger Birchard died on 22 August 1805 at Wilmington, VT, at age 48. He was buried after 22 August 1805 at River View Cemetery, Wilmington, VT.

Drusilla Austin was born on 3 April 1762 at prob. Suffield, CT. She was the daughter of Daniel Austin and Abigail Phelps. Drusilla Austin married Roger Birchard, son of Sarah Jacob, on 2 December 1790 at Wilmington, VT. Drusilla Austin died on 3 March 1813 at Wilmington, VT, at age 50.

She was the daughter of Col. Judge John Russell and Sarah Trowbridge. Rebecca Russell married Capt Ezekiel Hayes, son of Daniel Hayes and Sarah Lee, on 26 December 1749 at Branford, New Haven Co., CT. Rebecca Russell died on 27 May 1773 at New Haven, CT, at age 50.

     

McCracken: He was active as a patriot during the Revolution, though there were some loyalists in the family, and also in the controversies attendant upon the development of the New Hampshire Grants into the State of Vermont, during which he espoused a pro-new York attitude, and thus received a New York land grant in gratitude. When he moved to New York, he was not accompanied by his daughter and her husband, Rutherford Hayes who remained in Vermont. Additional information see James William Hook's Lt. Samuel Smith (New Haven 1953). Col. Israel Smith was born on 2 April 1739 at Granby, Hampshire Co., MA. He was the son of Deacon John Smith and Elizabeth Smith. Col. Israel Smith married Abigail Chandler, daughter of Isaac Chandler and Abigail Hale, circa 1761 at perhaps Enfield, CT. Col. Israel Smith died on 7 June 1811 at Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY, at age 72. He was buried after 7 June 1811 at Colonial Cemetery, Sidney, NY.

     Abigail Chandler was born on 11 September 1741 at Enfield, CT. She was the daughter of Isaac Chandler and Abigail Hale. Abigail Chandler married Col. Israel Smith, son of Deacon John Smith and Elizabeth Smith, circa 1761 at perhaps Enfield, CT. Abigail Chandler died in October 1791 at Bainbridge, NY, at age 50. She was buried after October 1791 at Colonial Cemetery, Sidney, NY.

     Assume McCracken meant 1735 and not 1935. Sarah Jacob was born on 13 December 1735 at Mansfield, CT. She was the daughter of Joseph Jacob and Mary Storrs.

     Daniel Austin was born on 28 April 1720 or 9 May 1720 at Suffield, CT. He was the son of Nathaniel Austin Dr. and Abigail Hovey. Daniel Austin married Abigail Phelps, daughter of Capt. Timothy Phelps and Abigail Merrick, on 21 December 1749 at Wilmington, VT. Daniel Austin died on 24 June 1804 at Wilmington, VT. He was buried after 24 June 1804 at River View Cemetery, Wilmington, VT.

     Abigail Phelps was born on 11 November 1731. She was the daughter of Capt. Timothy Phelps and Abigail Merrick. Abigail Phelps married Daniel Austin, son of Nathaniel Austin Dr. and Abigail Hovey, on 21 December 1749 at Wilmington, VT. Abigail Phelps died in January 1816 at Wilmington, VT, at age 84.

     Sarah Lee was born on 24 April 1692 at Westfield, MA. She was the daughter of John Lee and Elizabeth Crampton. Sarah Lee married Daniel Hayes, son of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble, on 4 May 1721 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Sarah Lee died on 13 July 1738 at age 46.

     Col. Judge John Russell was born on 24 January 1687 at Branford, CT or Deerfield, MA. He was the son of Samuel Russell Rev. and Abigail Whiting. Col. Judge John Russell married Sarah Trowbridge, daughter of Thomas Trowbridge and Mary Winston, on 17 December 1707 at New Haven, New Haven Co., CT. Col. Judge John Russell died on 4 July 1757 at Branford, New Haven Co., CT, at age 70.

     McCracken reports a conflict over death date; teh Hayes Genealogy, 15 June 1757, and Hook and Russell Genealogy report 23 Jan 1761. McCracken suggests her further ancestry is in the splendid genealogy by Francis Bacon Trowbridge (New Haven 1908). Sarah Trowbridge was born on 26 November 1686 at New Haven, CT. She was the daughter of Thomas Trowbridge and Mary Winston. Sarah Trowbridge married Col. Judge John Russell, son of Samuel Russell Rev. and Abigail Whiting, on 17 December 1707 at New Haven, New Haven Co., CT. Sarah Trowbridge died on 15 June 1757 at New Haven, CT, at age 70.

     Elizabeth was John's first cousin. Deacon John Smith was born on 1 February 1697 at Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA. He was the son of John Smith and Mary Root. Deacon John Smith died in 1784 at "Missing Place" no. 5129. He married Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Benjamin Smith and Ruth Buck, in 1727. His estate was probated on 22 November 1784.

     Elizabeth Smith was born on 5 May 1703 at Northampton, MA. She was the daughter of Benjamin Smith and Ruth Buck. Elizabeth Smith married Deacon John Smith, son of John Smith and Mary Root, in 1727. Elizabeth Smith died on 12 January 1778 at age 74. She was buried after 12 January 1778 at West Brattleboro, VT.

     Isaac Chandler was born in 1717 at Andover, MA. He was the son of Ensign Henry Chandler and Lydia Abbott. Isaac Chandler married Abigail Hale, daughter of John Hale and Abigail Gleason, on 28 February 1740 or 1741. Isaac Chandler died on 5 June 1787 at Enfield, CT.

     McCracken suggests for further ancestry see Jacobus-Waterman hale, House and Related Families 232-236. Abigail Hale was born on 3 July 1718 at Enfield, CT. She was the daughter of John Hale and Abigail Gleason. Abigail Hale married Isaac Chandler, son of Ensign Henry Chandler and Lydia Abbott, on 28 February 1740 or 1741. Abigail Hale died on 18 June 1796 at age 77.

     Joseph Jacob married Mary Storrs, daughter of Samuel Storrs and Martha Burgess. Joseph Jacob was born on 3 August 1705 at Lynn, Essex Co., MA. He was the son of Joseph Jacob and Sarah Lindsey. Joseph Jacob died on 15 December 1790 at Mansfield, CT, at age 85.

     Mary Storrs married Joseph Jacob, son of Joseph Jacob and Sarah Lindsey. Mary Storrs was born in May 1710. She was the daughter of Samuel Storrs and Martha Burgess.

     Nathaniel Austin Dr. was born on 20 May 1678 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Capt. Anthony Austin and Esther Huggins. Nathaniel Austin Dr. married Abigail Hovey, daughter of Lt. Thomas Hovey and Sarah Cooke, on 27 January 1701 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT. Nathaniel Austin Dr. died on 12 December 1760 at Suffield, CT, at age 82.

     Abigail Hovey was born on 8 January 1682 at Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA. She was the daughter of Lt. Thomas Hovey and Sarah Cooke. Abigail Hovey married Nathaniel Austin Dr., son of Capt. Anthony Austin and Esther Huggins, on 27 January 1701 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT. Abigail Hovey died on 9 January 1764 at Enfield, CT, at age 82.

     Capt. Timothy Phelps was born in 1697 at Northampton, MA. He was the son of Deacon Nathaniel Phelps and Grace Martin. Capt. Timothy Phelps married Abigail Merrick, daughter of John Merrick Capt. and Mary Day, on 18 January 1725 or 1726 at Springfield, MA. Capt. Timothy Phelps died on 5 December 1788 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.

     Abigail Merrick was born on 5 April 1702 at Springfield, MA. She was the daughter of John Merrick Capt. and Mary Day. Abigail Merrick married Capt. Timothy Phelps, son of Deacon Nathaniel Phelps and Grace Martin, on 18 January 1725 or 1726 at Springfield, MA. Abigail Merrick died on 16 August 1791 at Suffield, CT, at age 89.

     McCracken notes the possibility of a first marriage to Sarah Pixley, quoting Judd and Hook. John Lee was born on 2 January 1657 at Northampton, MA. He was the son of Walter Lee and Mary (?). John Lee died on 13 November 1711 at Westfield, MA, at age 54. He married Elizabeth Crampton, daughter of Dennis Crampton and Mary Parmelee, in 1686.

     Birth was between 1662 and 1667. Elizabeth Crampton was born in 1662 at Guilford, New Haven Co., CT. She was the daughter of Dennis Crampton and Mary Parmelee. Elizabeth Crampton married John Lee, son of Walter Lee and Mary (?), in 1686.

     Samuel Russell Rev. was born on 4 November 1660 at Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA. He was the son of John Russell Rev. and Rebecca Newberry. Samuel Russell Rev. was graduated in 1681 at Harvard. He married Abigail Whiting, daughter of John Whiting and Sybil Collins, circa 1686. Samuel Russell Rev. participated in an ordinance in the LDS church on 7 March 1687 or 1688 at Branford, New Haven Co., CT. He died on 24 June 1731 at Branford, New Haven Co., CT, at age 70.

     Abigail Whiting was born circa 1665. She was the daughter of John Whiting and Sybil Collins. Abigail Whiting married Samuel Russell Rev., son of John Russell Rev. and Rebecca Newberry, circa 1686. Abigail Whiting died on 7 May 1733.

     Thomas Trowbridge was born on 14 February 1664 at New Haven, CT. He was the son of Thomas Trowbridge and Sarah Rutherford. Thomas Trowbridge married Mary Winston, daughter of John Winston Sgt. and Elizabeth (?), on 16 October 1685. Thomas Trowbridge died on 15 September 1704 at age 40.

     Mary Winston was born on 24 June 1667 at New Haven, CT. She was the daughter of John Winston Sgt. and Elizabeth (?). Mary Winston married Thomas Trowbridge, son of Thomas Trowbridge and Sarah Rutherford, on 16 October 1685. Mary Winston died on 16 September 1724 at New Haven, CT, at age 57.

     John Smith was born on 15 May 1665. He was the son of John Smith and Mary Partridge. John Smith died on 20 January 1724 at Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA, at age 58. He married Mary Root, daughter of John Root and Mary Ashley, in 1687.

     Mary Root was born on 22 September 1667. She was the daughter of John Root and Mary Ashley. Mary Root married John Smith, son of John Smith and Mary Partridge, in 1687. Mary Root died after 20 January 1724.

Benjamin Smith married Ruth Buck, daughter of Henry Buck and Elizabeth Churchill, on 14 March 1699 or 1700. Benjamin Smith died between 5 July 1754 and 4 February 1755.
