Physician and surgeon, enlisted at Hamilton, Madison Co., NY for 3 years in 157th NY Regt, organized there Sept 1862; was serving as Asst. Surgeon when discharged Feb. 7, 1865; practiced at Whitehall, Washington Co., NY.

Rush and Helen were enumerated in the 1870 Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY, federal census. They were living in the house of his father. He was a physician, age 29, she was 21. There were no children enumerated.

Rush B. and Hellen A. were enumerated in the 1880 Whitehall, Washington Co., NY, federal census, page 47. He was a physician age 40, she was 31, keeping house. Marion age 6 was the only child in the household.

Rush B. and Elizabeth C. were enumerated were enumerated in the 1900 District 146, Whitehall, Washington Co., NY, federal census. He was a physician, age 59, she was 20. There were no children in the household.

Silas Wright Holcombe1

b. 8 December 1842
     Silas Wright Holcombe was born on 8 December 1842 at New York City, NY.2,3 He was the son of Diodorus Sicculus Holcombe and Maria S. Cole. Silas Wright Holcombe married Elizabeth Vilas on 29 October 1868.3 Silas Wright Holcombe died at New York City, New York Co., NY.3

Silas Wright Holcomb was born December 8, 1843, at Willsborough, New York. He commenced his classical education at the Academy in Champlain, New York, and entered Dartmouth College at the beginning of Fall term, August 24, 1860. He left in the summer of 1861.

He began the study of law in February, 1863, reading in the office of Judge Peter S. Palmer and Hon. Smith M. Weed, of Plattsburgh, New York. He was admitted to the bar of New York, at Albany, New York, in 1866, and immediately commenced the practice of his profession at Plattsburgh, New York. He remained here one year, when he went to New York City, arid practised for one year. He then removed to Plattsburgh in January, 1868, and became the junior member of the legal firm of Palmer, Weed & Holcomb.

Wright and Lizzie were enumerated in the 1870 Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY, federal census. He was a lawyer, age 26, she was 21. The only child in the household was Chs' 8 months.

He continued a member of the above firm at Plattsburgh until January 1, 1876, when he removed to New York City, where he has remained up to the present time. He became connected with the Erie Railway in a legal capacity in June, 1881.


Silas was chosen 2nd Lt. of the Home Guards of Burlington, Essex Co., NY; represented 9th Assembly Dist of NY in 1890, lawyer, NY City.

West Point Class of 1962, commissioned an Armor Officer, retired in 1984.

"Skip" Holcomb, on September 23, 2006, of cardiac arrest at Fort Belvoir, VA. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Ellen Holcomb, and two sons, Cornelius C. "Neil" Holcomb of Oak Hill, VA and Sean J. Holcomb of Mill Valley, CA; as well as four grandchildren, Patrick, Katherine and Nicholas Holcomb of Virginia and Haley Holcomb of California.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 16, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at EVERLY WHEATLEY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 West Braddock Rd, Alexandria. Services will be on Friday, November 17, 10:30 a.m., at the Old Post Chapel, Fort Myer, followed by burial with Full Military Honors in Arlington National Cemetery, near the graves of his father and grandfather, both retired Army Colonels. Afterward a reception will be held at the Ft. Myer Officers Club.
