He was the first settler in Wapping -- a section of Windsor -- to which he went as early as 1705. Shortly after settling there, he had a severe fight with a large and powerful Indian, who in a drunken state told him that he had already killed 99 white men and was agoing to make of him, the hundredth. Bissell, though young came off conqueror in the fearful struggle, and killed his foe, instead of being killed by him. Thomas Bissell was born on 3 December 1683 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Thomas Bissell Jr. and Hester Strong. Thomas Bissell married Martha Loomis, daughter of Joseph Loomis III and Lydia Drake, on 16 February 1709 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.
