     Eunice Griffin was born in 1736. She was the daughter of John Griffin and Eleanor Holcombe.

     Thomas Griffin was born in 1738. He was the son of John Griffin and Eleanor Holcombe.

     Jemima Griffin was born on 27 August 1740. She was the daughter of John Griffin and Eleanor Holcombe. Jemima Griffin married James Alderman, son of Joseph Alderman and Mindwell Case. Jemima Griffin married Ezekiel Holcombe, son of Lt. David Holcombe and Mehitable Buttolph. Jemima Griffin died on 17 May 1812 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 71; Carol Laun of the Salmon Brook Historical Society cites the First Church Records, Granby, for Jemima's death date.¹

     James Alderman was born in 1730. He was the son of Joseph Alderman and Mindwell Case. James Alderman married Jemima Griffin, daughter of John Griffin and Eleanor Holcombe. James Alderman died in 1775.

     Josiah Alford married Hannah Westover.

     Hannah Westover married Josiah Alford.

     Not in Seaver or McPherson, Bowman shows that they wre found in the Canaan records; also notes that some children of David listed by McPherson and Seaver were probably children of son David. Abigail Holcombe was born in 1758. She was the daughter of David Holcombe and Sarah Slater. Abigail Holcombe married Nathaniel Dean Jr. in 1778.

     Nathaniel Dean Jr. married Abigail Holcombe, daughter of David Holcombe and Sarah Slater, in 1778.

     Sarah Holcombe was born in 1746. She was the daughter of Joel Holcombe and Sarah Buel. Sarah Holcombe died in 1751.

     Sarah Holcombe was born in 1754. She was the daughter of Joel Holcombe and Sarah Buel. Sarah Holcombe married Noah Holcombe, son of David Holcombe and Sarah Slater. Sarah Holcombe died in 1835.

     Roger Holcombe was born in 1758. He was the son of Joel Holcombe and Sarah Buel.

     Lucy Holcombe was born in 1761. She was the daughter of Joel Holcombe and Sarah Buel.

     Silvey Holcombe was born in 1764. She was the daughter of Joel Holcombe and Sarah Buel. Silvey Holcombe died in 1835.

     Sabra Holcombe was born in 1766. She was the daughter of Joel Holcombe and Sarah Buel.

     Samuel and Abigail had 8 children. Dr. Samuel Mather was born in 1677. He was the son of Rev. Samuel Mather and Hannah Treat. Dr. Samuel Mather was graduated in 1698 at Harvard. He married Abigail Grant, daughter of John Grant and Mary Hull, on 13 April 1704. Dr. Samuel Mather died in 1746.

     Rev. Samuel Mather was born on 5 July 1650 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA. He was the son of Timothy Mather and Catherine Elizabeth Atherton. Rev. Samuel Mather married Hannah Treat, daughter of Hon. Robert Treat. Rev. Samuel Mather died on 18 March 1728 at age 77.

Samuel was the third minister of the First Congregational Church in Windsor, Ct.

     Hannah Treat was the daughter of Hon. Robert Treat. Hannah Treat married Rev. Samuel Mather, son of Timothy Mather and Catherine Elizabeth Atherton. Hannah Treat died on 8 March 1708.

     Timothy Mather was born in 1628 at Liverpool, Lancastershire, England.² He was the son of Rev. Richard Mather and Katherine Hoult. Timothy Mather married Catherine Elizabeth Atherton, daughter of Humphrey Atherton and Mary Wales, on 20 March 1650 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA.² Timothy Mather died on 14 January 1685 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA.²

Timothy Mather was the only son of the emigrant that grew up to manhood who was not a preacher and is called the "Mather farmer" of the early time, and settled in the town with his father. His brothers Samuel and Nathaniel went back to Europe and were noted preachers. Eleazer was the first minister in Northampton, Mass., where he died the same year his father. Rev. Dr. Increase, settled in Boston. Timothy had a fall in has barn, which resulted in his death at the age of 56 years.


Maj. Gen. Humphrey Atherton, his father-in-law, was a distinguished man in the colony. They are buried in "Upham's Corner Cemetery." All persons in this country by the name of Mather who descend from the New England Mathers, can be traced directly to Timothy Mather, as the name ceases in all other lines with Samule Mather, the grandson of Rev. Dr. Cotton Mather. S. M. died in 1813.


Many Mathers in this country claim descent from Rev. Dr. Cotton Mather, but they are mistaken. There have been a number of Cotton Mathers later who have M. descendants.


The Mathers now are from the three grandsons of Rev. Richard, that settled in Connecticut, Rev. Samuel (of Windsor branch), Richard (of Lyme branch), or Atherton (of Suffield branch). ³

     Catherine Elizabeth Atherton was born on 28 September 1628 at Winwick, Lancastershire, England.¹ She was the daughter of Humphrey Atherton and Mary Wales. Catherine Elizabeth Atherton married Timothy Mather, son of Rev. Richard Mather and Katherine Hoult, on 20 March 1650 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA.¹ Catherine Elizabeth Atherton died on 2 February 1710 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA, at age 81.¹

     Rev. Richard Mather was born in 1596 at Lowton, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Thomas Mather and Margaret (?). Rev. Richard Mather married Katherine Hoult on 29 September 1624 at England. Rev. Richard Mather married Sarah Rossiter on 25 August 1656. Rev. Richard Mather died on 22 April 1669 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA.²

     Katherine Hoult was born on 18 January 1596 at Bury, Lancastershire, England.¹ She married Rev. Richard Mather, son of Thomas Mather and Margaret (?), on 29 September 1624 at England. Katherine Hoult died in 1655 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA.¹

     Sarah Rossiter married Rev. Richard Mather, son of Thomas Mather and Margaret (?), on 25 August 1656.

     Thomas Mather was born at Lowton, Lancashire, England.

     Deacon Samuel Smith was born on 17 January 1639 or 27 January 1639 at Weathersfield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He married Mary Ensign, daughter of James Ensign and Sarah Elson, in 1662 at Weathersfield or Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Deacon Samuel Smith died on 10 September 1703 at Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA.¹

     Eunice Mather was born. She was the daughter of Samuel Mather II and Martha Holcombe. Eunice Mather married Elihu Clark.

     Elihu Clark married Eunice Mather, daughter of Samuel Mather II and Martha Holcombe. Elihu Clark married Martha Mather, daughter of Samuel Mather II and Martha Holcombe.

     Martha Mather was born in 1732. She was the daughter of Samuel Mather II and Martha Holcombe. Martha Mather married Elihu Clark.

     Bowman lists this child referencing NGSQ 1938. Stiles does not list his child. Sarah Mather was born in 1737. She was the daughter of Samuel Mather II and Martha Holcombe. Sarah Mather died in 1822.

     Samuel Mather MD was born in 1737. He was the son of Samuel Mather II and Martha Holcombe. Samuel Mather MD was graduated in 1756 at Yale.

     Elisha Mather was born in 1740. He was the son of Samuel Mather II and Martha Holcombe.

     Died unmarried. Timothy Mather was born on 11 May 1745. He was the son of Samuel Mather II and Martha Holcombe. Timothy Mather died on 4 September 1819 at age 74.

     Listed in Stiles but not in Bowman. William Mather MD was born in 1742. He was the son of Samuel Mather II and Martha Holcombe.

     Roxanna Holcombe was born in 1764 at Guildhall, Essex Co., VT. She was the daughter of Amos Holcombe and Mary Dibble. Roxanna Holcombe married Elihu Hall, son of Enoch Hall and Sarah Merrill. Roxanna Holcombe died on 19 March 1837 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT. She was buried at South Cemetery.

     Elihu Hall came with his father to Isle laMotte ca. 1788. He was a farmer and lived all his life in Isle LaMotte. He served as Selectman eleven terms between 1794-1835. Elihu Hall was born in 1771 at Gildhall, Essex, VT. He was the son of Enoch Hall and Sarah Merrill. Elihu Hall married Roxanna Holcombe, daughter of Amos Holcombe and Mary Dibble. Elihu Hall died on 25 May 1837 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT.

     Another possible death reported July 6, 1876. Stratton notes (p. 294) that three of Hiram's children married three children of Rowland s. and Abigail (Brown) Thomas of Chazy, Cinton County, NY. Chazy, NY is located across lake Champlain (to the west) of the island of Isle La Motte, BT. There was ferry service for many years, beginning around 1800, providing a means for trading and commerce between the Vermont islands and NY State. Hiram Hall was born on 24 December 1796 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT. He was the son of Elihu Hall and Roxanna Holcombe. Hiram Hall married Susan Hall, daughter of Jacob Hall and Jane Moore, circa 1835. Hiram Hall died on 25 May 1876 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT, at age 79.

     Susan Hall was born in 1808 at Lyman, Grafton, NH. She was the daughter of Jacob Hall and Jane Moore. Susan Hall married Hiram Hall, son of Elihu Hall and Roxanna Holcombe, circa 1835. Susan Hall died on 25 February 1859 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT.

     William E. Hall was born in 1834 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT. He was the son of Hiram Hall and Susan Hall. William E. Hall married Joanna E. Thomas, daughter of Rowland S. Thomas and Abigail Brown, on 22 January 1855 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT. William E. Hall died in December 1914 at New Albany, Floyd, IN.

     Joanna E. Thomas was born on 4 July 1837. She was the daughter of Rowland S. Thomas and Abigail Brown. Joanna E. Thomas married William E. Hall, son of Hiram Hall and Susan Hall, on 22 January 1855 at Isle La Motte, Grand Isle Co., VT. Joanna E. Thomas died on 8 December 1914 at age 77.
