     Israel Phelps Alderman was born on 24 July 1824 at West Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.^1,2 He was the son of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps.¹ Israel Phelps Alderman married Caroline Griffin, daughter of Zopher Griffin and Margery Trumbull, on 23 December 1847 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 Israel Phelps Alderman died on 11 October 1911 at age 87.¹

Israel was a dairy farmer and also operated a lumber mill.³

Israel and Caroline were enumerated in the 1860 Chenango, Broome Co., NY, federal census, page 568. He was a farmer and lumberman, age 36, she was 35. Children in the household were Margaret 11, Henry 7, and Edwin 1, all born NY.

     Caroline Griffin was born on 7 April 1825 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Zopher Griffin and Margery Trumbull. Caroline Griffin married Israel Phelps Alderman, son of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps, on 23 December 1847 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 Caroline Griffin died on 23 November 1891 at age 66.¹

      Capt. Edwin Buckley Alderman was also known as Edward Buckley Alderman.² He was born on 5 April 1826 at West Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.^1,2 He was the son of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps.¹ Capt. Edwin Buckley Alderman married Lydia A. Osborn on 6 January 1848.¹ Capt. Edwin Buckley Alderman died on 9 November 1906 at age 80.¹ He was buried at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA.

Edwin was a farmer and fruit grower at South Riverside, CA. During the Civil War he was Captain of a company in the Union Army. Edwin left Castle Creek, NY, about 1840 to 1843 and settled in Linn County near Cedar Rapids, IA, later moving to Marion County. His eight children, six girls and two boys, were born in Iowa. In 1889 he moved to California where he died.³

Edwin and Lydia were enumerated in the 1860 Anamosa, Cass Township, Jones Co., IA, federal census, page 641, dwelling 593, household 616. He was a farmer age 34, she was 34. Children in the household were Amaret age 11, born NY, M. E. (female) age 8 born IA, Fannie age 4 born IA, Ada age 11 months born IA.

Edwin B. and Lydia A. were enumerated in the 1900 Corona, Riverside Co., CA, federal census. He was a farmer, age 74, she was 74. Children in the household were daughter Ada A. Busby 40, and Geraldine L. Busby, 7.

     Lydia A. Osborn was born on 25 April 1826 at MA.² She married Capt. Edwin Buckley Alderman, son of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps, on 6 January 1848.¹ Lydia A. Osborn died on 13 June 1922 at age 96. She was buried at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA.

     Sarah Abigail Alderman was born on 6 February 1828 at West Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps.¹ Sarah Abigail Alderman married Dexter Cunningham on 28 May 1850.¹ Sarah Abigail Alderman died on 7 December 1911 at age 83.¹

Dexter was a dealer in agricultural implements.⁴

Newleyweds Dexter and Sarah were enumerated in the 1850 Fairview Township, Jones Co., IA, federal census. They were living next door to Sarah's brother, Edwin. Dexter was a farmer, age 25, she was 22.

     Dexter Cunningham was born on 12 July 1825 at NY.^2,3 He married Sarah Abigail Alderman, daughter of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps, on 28 May 1850.¹ Dexter Cunningham died on 20 April 1896 at age 70.²

     Emily Fidelia Alderman was born on 10 March 1830 at Castle Creek, NY.^1,2 She was the daughter of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps.¹ Emily Fidelia Alderman died on 13 May 1852 at age 22.¹

     Talcott Alderman was born on 17 May 1832 at Castle Creek, NY.^1,2 He was the son of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps.¹ Talcott Alderman married Mary J. Dunham on 17 January 1857.¹ Talcott Alderman died on 19 March 1904 at age 71.¹

     Mary J. Dunham was born on 9 September 1835.² She married Talcott Alderman, son of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps, on 17 January 1857.¹ Mary J. Dunham died on 19 March 1904 at age 68.²

     Amaret Lavinia Alderman was born on 13 September 1834 at Castle Creek, NY.^1,2 She was the daughter of Bradley Alderman and Sarah Phelps.¹ Amaret Lavinia Alderman married Henry H. Hosmer on 13 November 1851.¹ Amaret Lavinia Alderman died on 8 May 1909 at age 74.¹

Henry was a farmer and stock grower. They were members of the Baptist Church. ³

     Mary Brown was born on 14 November 1750 at Nova Scotia, Canada. She married Seth Griffin, son of Nathaniel Griffin II and Elizabeth Griffin, on 10 September 1772 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.

     Edwin Independence Alderman was born on 4 July 1861 at Anamosa, Jones Co., IA.¹ He was the son of Capt. Edwin Buckley Alderman and Lydia A. Osborn.¹ Edwin Independence Alderman married Rosella Bales on 11 November 1885.¹ Edwin Independence Alderman married Mrs. Harriett Yourex on 26 June 1916.² Edwin Independence Alderman died on 25 December 1923 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA, at age 62.¹

In 1908 Edwin was elected Imperial Potentiate of the Shriners and served in that highly honorable position for one year. He was an honorary member of practically every Shrine in America. He established the Christmas charity work which is conducted by the Shriners each year, and it was he who first formulated plans for the establishment of seven Shrine hospitals for crippled children, most of which are now in operation. He was very successful in the farm implement business in the Middle West, but being a combustion engineer by profession, he moved from Iowa to Los Angeles in 1911 where he associated himself with the Southern Counties Gas Corporation, later entering the oil field as an operator and investor. He was characterized by prominent men of the city as being a man of unusually pleasing personality and strong character. He was noted for his vigorous enthusiasm and his knack of inspiring his associates to higher accomplishments. While a resident of Marion, Iowa, he was elected Fire Chief and he organized the first Firemen's Association of that state. Later he organized the National Fire Chiefs' Association and became its first president.³

Edwin I. and "Ella M." were enumerated in the 1900 Marion, Linn Co., IA, federal census, ED 82, page 10A. He was a capitalist, age 38, she was 37; they had been married 14 years and had had two children, both living. Children in the household were Madge and Merle.

Edwin I. and Harriet were enumerated in the 1920 Los Angeles Township, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles Co., CA, federal census, ED 154, page 10A. In 1900 he had listed his father's birthplace as MA, but here he lists NY. Merle and Bales were also listed in the houehold. Edwin seems to be retired; Mele was a manager in an advertising company and Bales was an assembler in an automobile company.

     Rosella Bales was born on 7 August 1863 at Mount Vernon, Linn Co., IA.¹ She married Edwin Independence Alderman, son of Capt. Edwin Buckley Alderman and Lydia A. Osborn, on 11 November 1885.¹ Rosella Bales died on 16 June 1901 at age 37.

     Amaret L. Alderman was born on 27 December 1849.¹ She was the daughter of Capt. Edwin Buckley Alderman and Lydia A. Osborn.¹ Amaret L. Alderman died in 1868.¹

     Dr. Frank Holcombe was born on 5 November 1884; (GS). He was the son of Dr. Mahlon Beach Holcombe and Marcia Stearns. Dr. Frank Holcombe married Ruth M. (?). Dr. Frank Holcombe died on 31 October 1961 at age 76; (GS). He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Keesville, Essex Co., NY.
