John went to Kansas to take part in the border wars preceding the admission of the state as free soil, and was killed there. ¹

Charles was a farmer in Flora, IL, later living in Altadena, CA. After the death of Edith Lawrence he married a widow with some children. This was not happy and they separated shortly. During the Civil War he was a zouave, serving in Co. G, 54th Ohio Infantry. He had no children but brought up John Walter Popenoe. ¹
